The Desmond Wettern Media Award for Best Journalistic Contribution for 2008, one of the Maritime Foundation’s annual series of Maritime Media Awards, has been awarded to Julian Bray for his editorship of Lloyds List over the past eight years.
Commenting on the award, Julian Parker, Chairman of the Awards Committee, said, “Under his editorship, Lloyd’s List has enhanced its position as the worlds leading shipping and commercial newspaper, and is a symbol of Britain’s maritime journalistic excellence.”
The Awards – five in all – were presented by Countess Mountbatten of Burma at a dinner held at the Institute of Directors on Thursday 30 October.
The Mountbatten Maritime Award
The Mountbatten Maritime Award for Best Literary Contribution was presented to Tim Clayton for his book Tars: The Men who made Britain rule the waves.
The judges commended the originality of the writing, which describes life at sea through the eyes of captains, officers and men on two warships, the Monmouth and the Dragon, during the Seven Years War.
This title was selected from over twenty-five entries because it was “accessible, well researched, and a true literary masterpiece.”
The Donald Gosling Award
The Donald Gosling Award for Best Television, Film or Radio Contribution went to Marshall Corwin for his outstanding production Serious Ocean, which, in the words of the judges:
“Engages the viewer completely with outstanding filming, a cast of strong characters, and a total commitment to bringing the power and beauty of the sea to a new generation.”
The Maritime Fellowship Award
The Maritime Fellowship Award, introduced this year as a new Award to honour an individual who has given a lifetime’s service to a particular maritime sector, went to David King for his outstanding contribution to the Maritime Leisure sector.
The Award was coordinated through the British Maritime Federation (BMF). Rob Stevens, BMF’s Chief Executive said, “David King was a popular choice. He is successful, and has given his time generously to support our sector of industry in the widest sense. He has also brought on young talent that will ensure Britain’s leadership position continues into the future.”
The Desmond Wettern Fleet Award
The Desmond Wettern Fleet Award for HM Ship or Unit that has made the best contribution to a positive image of the Royal Navy was presented to Captain Steve Chick RN, CO of HMS Illustrious for services to humanity and for her role in the Channel 5 television documentary series that covered her recent deployment to the Middle East.
