In 1995, in memory of Desmond Wettern, the former naval correspondent of The Daily Telegraph, the Foundation initiated the Desmond Wettern Media Award to give recognition to those journalists who do most to create public awareness of maritime matters. This initiative has since grown into a major national event, the annual Maritime Media Awards.

This year’s awards reveal an extraordinary range of talent with more nominations than ever. Our main charitable focus this year is on inspiring youth to become involved in the maritime sector.

We will be honoured by the presence of HRH The Princess Royal. The First Sea Lord will also be present amongst other senior members of both the media and the maritime industry.

The Maritime Media Awards are presented to individual journalists, writers, broadcasters and film producers who have made an outstanding contribution to the public understanding and awareness of maritime matters. In addition, the Desmond Wettern Fleet Award will be given to the Ship or Unit which has projected the most image of the Royal Navy.

The Maritime Media Awards will take place on Wednesday, 14 November 2012 at the Institute of Directors, 116 Pall Mall, London, SW1Y 5ED.
